I think a big part of it is that basketball didn't explode in popularity until MJ was already the face of the league. Bird missed the boom by a few years. I'd take bird over leChina any day of the week. Bird was the better shooter, scorer, rebounder, passer, clutch shooter, and defender. Larry wasn't very athletic and he couldn't jump high but he put in the effort to be a good defender. LeChina is extremely athletic and can jump high but he dont put in the effort. When he came in, they created a loaded team. I think it was because they brought out the best in each other. I think as a leader, he could have maybe done that anywhere. When your leader won't give up a ball, hustles so hard, and gladly shares the action, I think it's hard not to do your best.

I think the field goal percentage is misleading because Lebron is around the rim a lot more than Bird and it inflates his numbers. If we're looking at just midrange shooting, Bird is a lot better. Having said that, I want to be clear that I think Lebron is obviously better at attacking the basket with layups or dunks than Larry. You're 100 percent right about Larry being a more complete player than Lebron. Lebron is a better athlete, but his game has some weak points; Bird's doesn't.

Look at it this way. Do you think MJ is the goat? When MJ sat out for a year the Bulls record went from 57 wins to 55. When Bird sat out a year the Celtics record went from 57 wins to 43. Keep in mind that Jordan fans use the argument all the time that MJ carried the bulls and the Celtics carried Bird. If you want to win games as a team Bird is as good as anyone who ever played. Larry Bird averaged more steal, more block shots. The only two standard stats that LeBron has better is points per game and a little bit more assist I believe like less than one. You can argue though Larry's a better more fluid passer. Larry was way better than the clutch probably the greatest clutch player of all time. So really it's not even close to me birds just a better all around basketball player than LeBron.

He is the most feared by the referees, allowing him to keep touching them and not get a technical. He serves 2 positions whenever he's at the court. He's supposed to be the small forward but when on defense, serves more of a supervisor role, watching the offense score on his teammates. He is so revered by the media that when he has the least points in the game, the media shows the points for his teammates but shows his minutes played to make it look like he contributed the most for their win.
